Think of the Prelims as a filter. Its score is used only to shortlist candidates and does not carry forward to the Mains. About 2.5 times the number of seats in each category get shortlisted, and the Mains then has a Studio Sensitivity Test and an In-Person Sensitivity Test. So the goal of these twelve weeks is simple: get shortlisted.
Are You Eligible?
Students from any Class 12 stream, whether Science, Commerce or Arts, can apply if they are passing or appearing in 2026-27 and clear the exam in the first attempt without a backlog. On age, General and EWS candidates must be born on or after 1 July 2006. For OBC-NCL, SC and ST candidates the date is 1 July 2003, and for PwD candidates it is 1 July 2001.
What Is the NID Entrance Exam Syllabus?
NID does not publish a chapter-wise NID entrance exam syllabus. The handbook only says that the Prelims may include text and visuals. In practice, aspirants prepare the skills a designer uses every day:
- Drawing and sketching

Your 12-Week NID DAT 2027 Preparation Plan
Weeks 1 to 4 (28 Sept to 25 Oct): Build the Foundation
- Read the full handbook and confirm that you are eligible.
- Draw for 45 minutes daily from real objects, like a kettle, slippers or a tiffin box.
- Practice proportion, perspective and shading.
- Keep one dated sketchbook so you can see your own progress.
Weeks 5 to 8 (26 Oct to 22 Nov): Sharpen Design Thinking
- Redesign an everyday object, such as a school bag or umbrella, in ten different ways within 15 minutes.
- Observe a busy scene for ten minutes, then sketch it from memory.
- Solve reasoning and visual puzzles against a timer.
- Show your work to a teacher or senior every week and note their feedback.
Weeks 9 to 12 (23 Nov to 20 Dec): Apply, Test and Revise
This block has fixed deadlines, so treat each one like an exam paper.
- Week 9: submit your application well before 30 November.
- Weeks 10 and 11: attempt full-length mock papers under exam conditions and keep a log of your mistakes.
- 10 December: download and print your admit card, because NID does not send a separate copy.
- Week 12: revise lightly, check your test centre location and rest well.

Application Mistakes to Avoid
- Uploading a photo or signature that is not a JPG between 50 and 200 KB.
- Submitting a category certificate that is not a PDF or is larger than 1 MB.
- Using an EWS or OBC-NCL certificate issued before 1 April 2026, or one that is not in your own name.
