  • No significant change in test format, but anticipate changing question patterns.
  • Increased focus on practical problem-solving in CAT and Situation Test.
  • Updated presentation guidelines for the postgraduate courses’ portfolio.

Staying current with the authentic NIFT notification is important to appreciate any fine nuances in format or assessment.

GAT vs CAT: What’s the Difference

The NIFT exam consists of two broad written tests:

  1. General Ability Test (GAT)

Objective: Tests general knowledge, logical, and analytical skills.

Eligible for:  B.Des and M.Des candidates.

GAT Tests:

        Duration: 2 hours

        Mode: CBT (Computer-Based Test)

Objective: Assess design thinking and creativity.

Eligible For: Only B.Des and M.Des candidates.

        CAT Tests:

  • Observational Drawing
  • Creative Imagination
  • Use of Color and Composition
  • Visual Communication Skills

Mode: Pen and Paper

Tip: CAT will have more importance for B.Des students, so be sure to develop your drawing and storytelling skills.

Situation Test: Format, Evaluation & Preparation

Situation Test is the second phase for shortlisted B.Des candidates subsequent to the written examinations.

Format:

  • On-the-spot model-making with given materials.
  • Time limit: 2 hours
  • Along with a short write-up of your model.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Creativity and innovation
  • Space visualization
  • Usage of material and finish
  • Ability to convey the idea

Preparation Tip: Practice making 3D models with simple materials (thermocol, paper, fabric) under time constraints.

Marking Scheme & Time Management

Knowing the marking scheme prevents guesswork mistakes:

SectionMarksNegative Marking
GAT100Yes (-0.25)
CAT100No
Situation Test100 (weightage-based)NA

Time Management Tricks:

  • Take 20-25 minutes for each GAT section.
  • In CAT, do not waste a lot of time on a single idea—keep pace with every question.
  • Practice with a timer, so you practice under exam conditions.

Analyzing Past Papers Under Exam Pattern

While solving past papers from the NIFT exam gives an understanding of:

  • Types of questions and their level of difficulty
  • Time spent on various sections
  • Recurring GK topics (or data interpretation & reasoning types)

You can find and practice all the past 5 years ‘ papers. Pay particular attention to:

  • CAT subjects (for example, Design a Poster to promote Environmental Awareness)
  • GAT paragraphs and puzzles

Observation: Most CAT toppers said solving past papers helped them understand how to communicate their ideas under time pressure.

Effective Preparation Methods From Insights Into Experience

  • Mock Tests: Repeat the exam conditions (weekly).
  • Dual Concept Operating: Share your time for preparation towards CAT creativity and GAT logic/vocabulary
  • Create Journals: Map your thoughts every day from previous events or social issues.
  • Group Discussions: Good for building your GK and confidence for the written in exam.
  • Use NCERT Books for GK & Quant Basics.
