If you want to work in design, you’ve probably heard of UCEED, NIFT, and NID, which are three of India’s most important admission exams. What does UCEED mean?
IIT Bombay runs the UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design). If you’re aiming for a B.Des at top IITs like Bombay, Guwahati, Hyderabad, or IIITDM Jabalpur, this is your go-to exam. It focuses on product design, user experience (UX), and visual communication.
What is NIFT?
NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) administers its own entrance exam to students interested in fashion design, technology, and management. It is the most popular alternative for fashion-focused candidates, with 18 campuses spread across India.
What is NID?
NID (National Institute of Design) administers the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) for admission to its B. Des and M. Des programs. If you enjoy industrial, graphic, or animation design, NID may be the right place for you.

Eligibility and Difficulty Levels:
- UCEED looks for logic, understanding, analytical thinking and imagination.
- NID looks for in-born creativity and sketching ability.

You may apply for all if you are a passing or appearing Class 12 certification. There are some differences in age limits and attempts, please check the websites of each.
Job Roles
- UCEED Graduates are typically found working as UX/UI designers, Product designers or in technology embedded design roles.
- NIFT Graduates usually work within the fashion business and could be as apparel designers, product or merchandising managers or textile researchers.
- NID Graduates are found in Industrial design, animation, branding and visual storytelling roles.
